NATIONAL TESTING PROGRAM
This testing program is addressed to secondary school students to complete their secondary education level and known as National Examination (UN). It is conducted to measure and evaluate the learning process for primary and secondary education level. The result is used to determine the graduation; enter to the next education level; measure the education unit quality; as well as to determine the accreditation. Three subjects Indonesian, English and Mathematics have to be examined by the National Examination.
CRITERIA FOR ADMISSION TO LOCAL UNIVERSITIES
There are several ways to apply to public institutions. One can apply through a Student Entrance Selection Examination (SPMB) held nationally once a year for all public universities, or apply directly to each institution which called as Independent Program. Several subjects such as mathematics, English, and Indonesian are examined. Other acceptance program is Special Admission Entrance to University (PMDK). This program is for students with excellent academic records. They are exempted from the entrance exam.

A = Very Good (4)
B = Good (3)
C = Satisfactory (2)
D = Less (1)
E = Poor (0)
Nine years of Indonesian education is compulsory. The Indonesian education system can be divided into the following categories:
- Primary Education (Pendidikan Dasar): Children start at age 6, there are 6 grades to complete. It can be formed as Elementary School (SD), Islamic Elementary School or Madrasah Ibtidaiyah (MI) or other form equivalent at the first six years.
- Secondary Education (Pendidikan Menengah):
Junior High School (SMP) or Islamic Junior High School or Madrasah Tsanawiyah (MTs) or other form equivalent. It takes 3 grades to complete (compulsory as of 1994)
Senior High School (Sekolah Menengah Atas or SMA or SLTA or SMU). It takes 3 grades to complete. It consists of general and vocational secondary education. The general known as Senior High School (SMA), and Islamic Senior High School or Madrasah Aliyah (MA), and Vocational Senior High School known as Sekolah Menengah Kejuruan (SMK), and/or Islamic Vocational Senior High School Madrasah Aliyah Kejuruan (MAK) or other form equivalent.
- Tertiary Education (Pendidikan Tinggi): The higher education institution is categorized into two types: public and private which supervised by Department of National Education. There are 3 types of higher education institution: Universities, Institutes and Academy or college.
Grading System for Primary and Secondary Level
10 = A+ ( Superior)
9 = A (Excellent)
8 = B+ (Very Good)
7 = B (Good)
6 = C (Fair)
5 = D (Poor)
1-4 = E (Fail)
